The Imps have completed the signing of wing-back Jack Burroughs on a season long loan from EFL Championship side Coventry City.
The 22-year-old recently signed a new contract with Coventry earlier in the summer and is able to operate as either a left or right sided wing-back. He is held in high regard by Coventry and their management staff, making 14 appearances in their first team last year, as they reached the Championship play-off final.
Jack has been with Coventry since 2009 in their youth system, and made his first team debut for the club in the EFL Trophy against Forest Green Rovers, that particular appearance made him the first player born in this millennium to represent Coventry. He later earned a professional contract with the club and joined Nuneaton Borough on a month long loan making three appearances. He also gained experience with National League North side Gloucester City on a month long loan.
His first long term loan spell was spent with Ross County in 21/22. He made 17 appearances in Scotland, and impressed with The Staggies during his time there. That loan spell earned him a chance to impress in the Coventry first-team last season. Coventry fans were impressed with him last season, and many were hoping he’d stay around this season as a replacement for Fankaty Dabo, after his release from the club.
Jack can play on both sides for us, which makes this an extremely important signing. We need cover for both sides, so we don’t interrupt the consistency of the back-three, by moving either Sean Roughan or TJ Eyoma into wing-back and not only does Jack add cover, he adds quality. He hasn’t come here to sit on the bench, so he’s going to want to play and that competition will really help push us forward and improve other players in the squad too.
Upon signing for City, Jack said: “I’m at the stage of my career where I need to play games, I was interested as soon as the club showed an interest in me and the style of play suits me.
“I know players who have been here before, such as Lewis Fiorini and Brooke Norton-Cuffy, and they’ve spoken very highly of the club as well as the supporters – how much noise they can create and how they get behind you. It feels like a good place for me to come, show people what I can do and move forward in my career.”
City’s director of football Jez George added: “We have concentrated so far this summer on securing permanent signings but, unless something unexpected happens, we will now be concentrating on the loan market to complete the squad.
“Jack is a fantastic addition for us, with the physicality and athleticism we are looking for in this position, ready to play in League One and crucial in our squad build by being able to provide competition in both wing-back positions.”
Jez’s quotes are quite interesting, it’s been a big focus this summer to concentrate on permanent signings, and it’s been a great success. We’ve had no worries going into the start of the season with our first eleven as they are all owned by the club, and that is a big step forward. However, as we look to complete the squad, Jez has made it clear that we are concentrating on loan signings, which will hopefully help us add added quality, while not being over reliant on them.
Jack is a good addition for us, and hopefully he can have a successful season at Sincil Bank.
