Young defender Hayden Cann has returned to the Imps, ending his spell at Peterborough Sports.

Cann joined the National League North side on a season-long loan in the summer after the announcement of a one-year extension to his contract. The 20-year-old has strung together a number of impressive performances in the 6th tier, and was a key cog at Lincoln Road. During his time with the Turbines, Cann made 20 appearances, scoring three times. His most recent goal came in a 4-2 victory against Bishop’s Stortford.

The central defender made his Imps debut in October 2020 in a 3-1 win against Mansfield Town in the EFL Trophy, but hasn’t featured in the first team since in a professional game. He has been handed opportunities in pre-season though across multiple seasons.

Cann has been moving up the football pyramid at a steady rate, and is clearly rated at the club. In each of his loan spells at Lincoln Utd, Gainsborough and Peterborough Sports, he has shown the capabilities to play at a higher level, and it is likely he’ll leave on another loan deal to either the National League or the League of Ireland to develop even more ahead of Michael Skubala’s first pre-season in charge at Sincil Bank.

In a Twitter post, Peterborough Sports announced they were gutted the defender had been recalled, and joint first team manager, Michael Gash, said: “Myself and Luke would like to thank Hayden for all his hard work and top performances throughout the season so far. Hayden came in and improved us as a team and from his performances week in week out has show his ability as a player.”
