Michael Skubala was pleased with the character showed from his team after a vital 2-1 win against Cheltenham Town.

Joe Taylor and Freddie Draper scored either side of half-time to cancel out a Liam Sercombe penalty for the hosts. City started slow, but an excellent second half performance saw the Imps jump up into 6th ahead of the final week of League One action.

Skubala said: “We knew it was going to be tough coming to Cheltenham. Coming to a team that’s fighting for every point to stay up at this point of the season is always going to be a hard game.

“They started the game brightly but we didn’t start the game ourselves at all. We had to sort things out, but second-half I thought we blew them away and could’ve scored more.

Skubala praised the character of his team, and the whole group for their hard work in helping secure such a crucial result away from home under pressure.

“In the end, brilliant result, brilliant second half, impressive with Jack Burroughs, Adam Jackson coming in, TJ Eyoma coming on and Jack Moylan working hard and helping the team get three points.

“This group has got character and they’ll dig deep. That’s what we saw second half.”

The playoffs are now in City’s hands and if Skubala’s side secured three points next weekend at home to Portsmouth, they’ll be in with a chance for promotion to the Championship. Portsmouth have already secured the League One title, and lost on Saturday to mid table Wigan Athletic at Fratton Park. Skubala is predicting a tough test on the final day.

“It’s up to us and what we can do. Really tough game next week against the champions, who have been brilliant. We’ve got to give everything we’ve got next week, and see what happens.”
