Wright Out The Door: Keeper Heads for Lincolnshire Rivals
City goalkeeper Jordan Wright has departed the club to join League Two rivals.
Jordan Wright has left Lincoln City to join Grimsby Town, on a permanent deal.
Wright signed for the Imps in January 2022, joining as deputy keeper to then loanee Josh Griffiths. An injury to the West Bromwich Albion stopper meant Wright was thrusted into action sooner rather than later, playing 13 times in League One as City secured their status as a League One club for yet another season.
He dropped back down to second choice keeper behind Carl Rushworth in the 2022/23 season but he still had plenty of opportunities to impress, earning a new deal towards the end of the season after a run of games in the team due to suspensions and international duty for usual number one Rushworth. The highlight of his first full season at the club was undoubtedly his performances in the EFL Trophy, being the hero in multiple penalty shootouts.
The most recent season was probably the most difficult during his time at the LNER Stadium for Wright, featuring just once in League One in a 3-1 win against Carlisle, and only 3 appearances in the cup competitions.
Wright has proved himself as a keeper capable of playing regular League One football at the Imps when given the chance, so the deal is certainly a coup for Grimsby in the division below. The move also gives Wright a chance for more regular football, which wouldn’t have been a possibility at Sincil Bank throughout the 2024/25 with Lukas Jensen as number one.
Who serves as deputy keeper is an interesting prospect. On one hand you’ve got Sam Long, who is rated highly at the club and has just come back off a very good loan spell with Falkirk or you bring in a goalkeeper to be a backup, which can prove hard, especially when they’ll be backup to a keeper like Jensen, who missed just one league game last season.
Wright deserves to be playing regular football, and we just couldn’t give him that, so for that reason, this a good move for everyone involved.
