The Imps have completed the signing of attacking left wing-back Jaden Brown on a two year deal following his release from Sheffield Wednesday.

Brown came through the youth academy at Tottenham, where he played alongside Imps’ defender TJ Eyoma and ex-Imp Tashan Oakley-Boothe. He never managed to make a senior appearance for Spurs, but did appear in Premier League 2, the UEFA Youth League, and for Spurs’ Under-23s side in the EFL Trophy. He scored once in the latter competition, in a 4-0 defeat of Gillingham back in 2018.

He made the move to Huddersfield from Spurs in search of first-team football, he did well initially for the Terriers making the left-back spot his own under the management of Danny Cowley. He seemingly struggled with injury during the middle of the season with his second-to-last appearance coming on the 12th January 2020 before coming off the bench on the last game of the season against Millwall to play seven minutes. His final season with Huddersfield saw him make thirteen Championship appearances but his minutes were limited and the majority of his games came from the bench with his final appearance for the club coming against Nottingham Forest, playing just six minutes.

He made the move to Sheffield Wednesday following their relegation to League One but he failed to get going for Darren Moore’s side featuring just thirty-two times over the two seasons he spent with the club. Despite having a difficult season last time out not playing as much as he would’ve liked, he played a part in Wednesday’s promotion bid with a man of the match performance against Peterborough in March. Aden Flint praised Brown for his contribution, with the full-back getting an assist and making a last ditch tackle as Wednesday continued their unbeaten run.

He left the club at the end of the season after he wasn’t offered a new deal by Wednesday, and has joined the Imps despite reported interest from plenty of other League One clubs. Brown likes to get forward and is a useful asset in the final third, he comes into the club at a time when we’ve been crying out for attacking wing-backs, which is obviously something we lacked last season until Harry Boyes stepped up late in the season.

Upon signing the contract, Jaden told the club’s media team: “I’m excited to be here. I want to come here and make an impact – it’s all about getting minutes at this stage in my career.

“The players in that role who have been here over the past few years have done well and pushed onto the Championship, I’m here to elevate my game in the same way. I like to chip in with goals and assists, I’m very attacking and always looking to get on the front foot.”

On paper this looks like a good signing and I hope he can deliver next season. He comes in with a reputation, having come through the Spurs youth system and playing first team Championship football with Huddersfield before dropping down to a League One team striving for promotion. He also comes in on a permanent deal and a free transfer, which is once again great business by the club. On a negative note, if you were hoping of Harry Boyes returning to the club, I wouldn’t hold high hopes for that now.
